Religion: Humanity’s Greatest Boon — or Its Darkest Curse?

Religion has been humanity’s companion since the dawn of civilization. Born from fear of the unknown, it offered comfort, meaning, and a way to explain life’s mysteries. From the polytheistic pantheons of Egypt and Greece to the monotheistic traditions of Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, religion has shaped cultures, laws, and identities across the world.

At its best, religion has been a force for peace. Ashoka’s embrace of Buddhism, Akbar’s tolerance in Mughal India, and the pluralism of ancient societies remind us that faith can unite rather than divide. Its true purpose is clear: to guide morality, strengthen community, and connect humanity to the divine.

Yet history tells another story. Religion has often been hijacked by power-hungry leaders, twisted into a weapon of war and domination. Instead of offering multiple paths to the same spiritual destination, it has been used to insist that only one path is valid — often enforced through violence. The tragedy is that those who manipulate religion for political gain rarely walk the spiritual path themselves.

Equally troubling is the role assigned to women in most religions, which remain deeply patriarchal. Men are elevated as ultimate authorities while women are relegated to inferior roles. Across traditions, women are restricted from serving as priests, imams, or clergy. They are barred from certain rituals or sacred spaces, especially during menstruation. Strict dress codes are imposed almost exclusively on women, rarely on men. These rules, crafted by men who claim superiority, are ironic — for without women, life itself would not exist.

Invoking the name of the Almighty to wage war, commit unspeakable atrocities, and subjugate women was never the message preached by the learned prophets, but rather a distortion of their teachings for selfish gain. Religion, as envisioned by prophets and spiritual teachers, was meant to guide humanity toward peace, comfort, brotherhood, and love.

The true aim of religion must be restored: to lead all of humanity — men and women alike — toward the final destination of spiritual fulfilment and communion with the divine. Only then can peace reign on earth, which is the truest offering to God.
